"I was born with a pretty serious cleft lip and palate. As you can imagine this set me up for an early life filled with countless hospital visits to try and “fix” my face. Up to this point in my life I have gone through 18 operations. After each I spent ungodly amounts of time staring in the mirror analysing my constantly changing appearance. Trying to get to know the image that was staring back at me. There was a hyper focus around me on “fixing” me to the point that I started seeing myself through the eyes of others instead of through my own to try and identify what was still broken. My last operation was in August 2017, since then I’ve started slowly meeting myself every day through my own lens. I never liked to identify as someone with a cleft lip, but I cannot deny the impact it has had on me mentally and physically. But as far as labels go, I will always identify as Nyall, whoever that is or may be in the future."
